This episode’s guest is Christin Lewis, a former special needs teacher turned Instagram influencer after starting her blog and having 3 babies in less than 3 years. When everyone thought her life was perfect and easy, Christin was struggling on the inside to stay afloat. She decided to open up on the hard parts of life and everything changed. Tune in to the full episode because Christin shares how to tell your truth in a less than authentic world on social media. You won’t want to miss this one as I know it will encourage you today.

Mom-of-3 turned influencer

Christin started her blog as a creative outlet just two years ago after her youngest girls, a set of twins, came home after being in the NICU. She started receiving messages on how easy she was making it look and how perfect they were. “Instead of taking it as a compliment, it actually started to bother me a little bit,” Christin explains. In reality, she was struggling both mentally and physically but people couldn’t see past the pretty photos to the hurting woman inside. Given her background as a Special Education teacher and her desire to serve others, Christin decided to start a blog and share the realities she was going through behind the scenes of her perfectly curated Instagram feed.

Instagram is a highlight reel

She would be lying if she said she didn’t scroll down the rabbit hole. However, you need to find how to control the app, and not let it control you, she explains. Try to follow people that inspire and motivate you. Christin tries to view Instagram as inspiration and not a direct comparison, and that’s the healthiest way to view social media in her eyes. “Instagram is a highlight reel, but the people behind those tiny squares are humans and they’re going through struggles just like you,” Christin says. She looks to create and share content that is fruitful, that other people can utilize for growth and positive thinking.

How to tell your truth in the less-than-authentic world of social media

It’s very difficult to tell a whole story in just a small caption on Instagram. Christin finds it helpful to try to link every post and picture with some kind of blog post to give the reader an even bigger picture or go further into a story. She explained that she always wants her readers to see her struggles but also what she’s doing about it. “I just want people to be able to relate and to bring them joy,” she says. As an influencer, it’s a risk to share your struggles but it can be a risk not to share them too. People are longing for authenticity.
