Setting Boundaries and Taking Your Life Back as an Entrepreneur
Setting boundaries is a fun topic to talk about- said no one ever.
What are boundaries and once we set them, are we really able to keep them without ticking people off?
I believe the answer is yes. I have found that as a business owner, a wife, a mom, and as a friend- setting boundaries actually improves all of my relationships and business dealings, which is why I wanted to share a few things I’ve learned on setting boundaries as an entrepreneur.
Here are some signs you need to set boundaries.
For a detailed list of signs that we need boundaries, tune into the latest podcast episode. Otherwise, here’s a quick bullet pointed list of some signs that it’s time to set boundaries:
You’re unable to turn your brain off when it comes to work.
You’re constantly tired and your loved ones are making comments.
You're burnt out.
You have no margin left in your life for the things you enjoy.
You’ve stopped investing in others.
How to get started with setting boundaries.
Before you begin setting boundaries, you have to decide what you values in life. If your boundaries are not created based off of strong values, your boundaries will be out the window when pressure rises in your business. Decide what your values are first and then set your boundaries. Here are some tips to follow when setting boundaries as an entrepreneur.
Be realistic about what boundaries you are going to set.
Outsource whatever you can. If someone can do the task 83% as well as you can- it should be delegated to them.
Set expectations upfront with your clients about how you work.
Consider a social media fast at least one day a week. Completely detach from you phone and work.
Find an accountability partner that can hold you to your new boundaries.
The benefits of setting boundaries in business.
The number one reason we obviously need boundaries is so we can grow our businesses. I don’t know about you, but I want to be in it for the long haul, sharing stories and strategies 5, 10 years from now. Without some boundaries, burnout would be inevitable. The next reason is that you are so much more than your business. The people around you need you to show up and be there for them. The last reason you need to set boundaries in your business is scalability. Boundaries help you create scalable systems within your business so you can expand and build your team and take on more clients.
