Who Can Launch an Online Course?
As well-known digital marketer, Amy Porterfield, puts it- you only need to know 10% more about a topic than your audience does to create a course on it.
With a vast array of free content available on the internet, it can get overwhelming to try to DIY your own research on a given topic. People are willing to pay you for the time it takes to gather the information and put it together in a digestible format.
Whether it’s a topic that you’ve devoted your life to researching or a hobby that you enjoy, anyone can create an online course about something they are passionate about.
What Types of Courses Can I Create?
In this episode, Aline shares four different types of courses you could create to sell online.
A Workshop: This is a 1-2 hour video that delivers quick wins on one specific topic. This would be the least expensive type of course but a great way to get your feet wet in course creation and to also establish yourself as an industry leader.
A Spotlight Course: This is a course that covers one topic in great detail. An example of a spotlight course would be “How to Use Reels to Grow your Instagram”.
A Signature Course: This type of course covers a broader topic with several sub-sections. Using our example for the Spotlight course, a signature course would cover Instagram as a whole, “How to use Instagram to Grow Your Business.” This course would not only cover Reels, but also Instagram Stories, Instagram Feed, and more.
A signature course + 1:1 Experience: This type of course is the most expensive type of course you can create because not only will you deliver content on a broad topic, but you will also offer some sort of one-on-one experience. After the course is completed, perhaps you offer a 1-hour coaching call with the student.
How to Create an Online Course
Aline breaks down for us the three phases to creating an online course. Strategy, creation, and launch. Let’s unpack this.
Phase 1- Strategy: During the strategy phase, you need to decide what type of course you will create, what the topic will be, what you are going to charge for your course, and how you will promote the course launch.
Phase 2- Creation: The creation phase is when you take the time to actually create the content of the course. If you are going to offer a course with videos, be sure to include visual aids and corresponding PDFs to help your students follow along and be more engaged with your content.
Phase 3: Launch: This may be the final step of creating an online course but it is arguably the most important. A clear launch strategy and an engaged audience will greatly determine how much revenue you will be able to pull in through your online course.
